The Origins of the Race

In the early 1930s, Tom Lasater, the founder of the breed, developed the Beefmaster by crossing the Hereford, Shorthorn and Brahman breeds.

His goal was to create a breed that was more productive than existing ones; capable of producing and from which to make money during the economic crisis in South Texas.

The Six Essential Elements

The new species was created on what we know to be the Six Essential Elements:

  • Weight
  • Conformation
  • Milk production
  • Fertility
  • Robustness
  • Attitude

These elements became the economic strength of the Beefmaster and made them a favorite among cattle breeders. Beefmaster is the only cattle breed specifically created to excel in these characteristics.

Beefmaster Breeders United

Since the early 1970s, when the breed experienced rapid expansion in its birthplace of South Texas, Beefmaster has survived several cattle market disasters that have not affected its growth and demand.
From 1974 to 1998, Beefmaster Breeders United (BBU) membership grew from 300 to nearly 7,000.
BBU, founded in 1961, is one of the top five largest registries in the United States by membership and among the top ten by registrations.
